Putting Minds To Rest
Up until now I’ve mostly been posting background material that hints at the new game’s mechanics, but it seems like some people are getting a bit worried so it’s probably best to clarify what Godfall is and is not.
In Monsters’ Den: Godfall, you take control of a fledgling Company. You build a roster of (created, customized) heroes, from which you assemble parties to tackle missions provided by the Order or private interests. The game no longer takes place in a single, continuous dungeon, but it is still very definitely a dungeon crawler.
It’s not a linear, narrative-focused RPG. It still relies heavily on procedural generation, and still allows for unlimited play.

I must think a little of Etrian Odyssey here. But EO had that stupid labyrinth-like dungeon that took painfully long to cross. I doubt (in other words: hope) that this won’t apply to MD: Godfall
about 1 year ago
EO is a reasonable comparison in terms of the roster thing. But EO also has a single continuous dungeon, manual mapping, random encounters etc.
The game’s not going all JRPG, the dungeon experience will be fairly similar to Book of Dread.

Hmm… interesting idea… wait, so what would this look like…? Complete dungeon crawl like the previous MD’s, or more functionality (e.g. world map)…?
pls make many many many more difficult tactical bosses and challenges etc…. MD book of dread in reality ends when you defeated the corrruptor and a legendary monster….and pls more specialization for non-specialized base classes…(berserker should be a part of warrior/ conjuror part of a mage / etc…that s my opinion

Dungeon Crawling does not make a game a JRPG or a WRPG – it’s mostly defined by the gameplay/story: JRPGs have predetermined characters in a elaborately written story, similar to Anime/Manga. WRPGs focus on combat mechanics (some are non-combat) and plot desicions, as well as self-created, customizable characters, similar to Tabletop RPGs (usually D&D).

I the design changes don’t bother me a bit. Have total faith this game is gonna rock.
Long as it works. And is interesting.

Thanks for clearing things up. Just wondering, will this still have the continuos dungeon crawl featured like it was in the other two MD’s, and will it be downloadable?
I personally am not certain I like (or dislike) the change, it’s normally a feature I don’t really fuss over in an RPG. I personally thought EO was fine (I liked Touhou labyrinth more though, which also had a single giant dungeon >=P).
Infinite mode/dungeon/whatever is always a plus though.

IN my opinion randomly generated infinite dungeon is good….but in original MD all bosses and all other things repeated!!!…So its not a real infinite dungeon..and after gaining all skills for all classes and defeating all possible bosses the game became boring…..the most fun for me was siege but when I reach about wave 25 I was getting bored because things repeated..

@Ghaleon: EO had a final boss which had 3 elemental attacks which can instant kill your party, and will use it at situations that you WILL need a guide for it to find out when he’ll do them. Also EO had those BS FOEs…
The best thing for replayability are insanely hard achivements, multiple endings, absurdly much varity (WoW is perticularly noteable in this), or custom dungeon creation (warcraft 3 and some FPS(doom for example) are even played today by a great amount of players, due to the high possiblities in customisation)

So it’s essentially like book of dread, except each different scenario would keep the same team and just have different missions type deal? All out of a central hub of a city?

How will the leveling system work in godfall?

Sorry i dont meant Ripfengor …

I’d rather say that there should be a difficulty with a cool name (Nightmare, Impossible, Godslayer etc.) but a lower difficulty for less able players. Hardcore games usually aren’t very popular because only a few people have the patience to master such games.
Or multible difficulties that get harder the further you progress in the story.
BTW: Hate me if ya want, But I found a way to post on the old biclopsgames forums.
I am so playing god, ain’t I?
I can’t post there anymore. Anyways James, if you’re the only one able to post it won’t be much different from when you would write page after page of your ideas. : P
about 1 year ago
@James: We two were mods – hence we can post, no one else I fear can do so.

Can’t wait for it
I still play Book of Dread, but would love new challenges. Good Luck!

Damn stories in games are for faggots..
@gwf: of the majority of players like in game stories, we know who is the faggot for sure.
infinite dungeon is nice, but without any new things it becomes boring, tactical Bosses and a lot of items are the key imo.
anyhow this will be the best flash game of 2010, I’m sure of it
about 1 year ago
Why don’t you do it like ADOM’s infinite floor dungeon, which has I think the highest number to create with 64 bit instead of actually infinte levels.
@chaosbladedc “the majority of players like in game stories” really? i would love to see statistics. it really depends on the person.
Of course it depends on the person, but the truth is story *IS* a major factor for most gamers in their games, unless you’re playing a genre which typically lacks them altogether (such as shmups). I personally don’t care for the most part.
I’m posting though because ChaosBlade’s super-sweet avatar has finally been ownt. Gufo is now reigning champion for the coolest monster /parsee jealous.
@ChaosBladeDC They’re not truly unlimited in my games either. I think I mostly used 32-bit signed integers, which would probably fail first on HP or damage values. Although I’ve never heard of anyone actually playing long enough for that to happen, so I’m content to call it “infinite”.
32 bit goes up to numbers around 4.2 billion
about 1 year ago
@Ripfengor:
I don’t know the statistics, but there is probably a reason why RPGs sell so good.

@Ghaleon: (shame I can’t edit my posts)
I would change my avatar if I could, Gravatar doesn’t let me log in though

So the custom portrait feature will still be available?
Er.. maybe.
like james, i found a way to post in the old forums in biclopsgames.com..anyways, i can’t wait for MD:godfall! and i love to hear that it is not linear!
wow! i just saw Revital’s pic! she’s so cute!
well i still play MD:BoD and the original MD but i lose easily..i can’t remember how i survived the first three stages!
yeah in-game custom portraits are awesome, but the ones chosen by default were nice too, maybe a bit more portraits for each class would be good though.
lol my monster is a mix of holiday things
about 1 year ago
@Gufo: Which Holiday are Cthulhu-like tentacles?
I sure hope it will be, thats one of the most unique perks of MD:BOD, thanks for getting back on my question though.
A cool feature would be levable equipment or so. I BoD I still have the feeling, that each 2-3 levels i need to rebuy my complete inventory, because the earlier level items get fast garbage, unfortunatly, purples are rarly an exception.
I kinda like how fast equipment expired in BoD… It made getting new gear exciting all the time.
Generally when a game has upgradeable equipment, you get those scenarios where “if you can’t get a pwn sword of speed by floor 10, just restart until you do”. That sort of thing.
Of course limited upgrades would still work out.
The thing is, if you miss getting up to date equipment in BoD there is a possible scenario that the game becomes absolutly unwinnable.
i’d really like to see more artwork, or maybe screenshots of some of the gameplay, but i can’t seem to find any. help? goodluck making the game. =)
Having an absolutely unwinnable scenario is definately not cool, but having the chance of that happening when the chance is extremely remote is kinda a given for a rogue-like rpg. Which MD kinda is.
@Ghaleon: Not that I mean it’s a bad thing, but that makes the restart kinda obsolete, doesn’t it?
First post here, just wanted to show my support and I can’t wait for it to come out. I have to limit myself to checking the page twice a week.
would it be 3D? i hope you can customize every hero or will it be still pictures? i hope this game is worth the wait we are putting a lot of faith in you for this new MD game. plz dont let us down.
