Doing It In Public
First of all, I’m sorry about the infrequent updates lately.
Truth be told, it’s not always easy to find something to post. There’s a lot I’d like show or tell you about, but it turns out I have a strong aversion to publicly showing things before they’re finished. This is, naturally, a bit of a problem when you’re trying to be more open about your development process. The thought of someone seeing placeholder art or WIP UI elements and thinking less of the game for it bothers me. But plenty of other developers manage it, so I’ll see if I can start scraping together some more actual gameplay shots for you in future.
Another thing that comes up a lot is the release date for the game: to be blunt, I don’t have one. The most specific I’ve ever gotten is “2010″, and I’m still hoping I won’t end up a liar about that. One of the great things about being an independent is being free of externally-imposed deadlines, and being free to take as long the game needs. This is a big game, much more complex than the previous ones. And I’m working hard.
I’ll put up a new character art preview soon.

First of, congrats for the epic headline lol.
As long as you make updates everything is fine. It’s important to just post something, because, if like one month passes and nothing happens, people start to think: “Was this abandoned?”
If there is nothing about the game that’s worth noting, try to write about something else, just as prove that you still work.

Hey the only thing you have to be 100% commited to is making that game.
I played the hell out of both the Monster Den games, and when I first figured out you were making a new one I was way excited. I haven’t made any games myself (don’t care much for learning the programming language).
But I also know that it takes a hell of a lot of work. I and several other people were waiting for months and months and a couple of years for a Punk-O-Matic 2 to come out. One of the worst parts of that excruciating experience was Evil Dog constantly saying that it would be there in three months, and the constant delays.
All that just to say, I want a release date that you believe it will be done by, all variables taken to heart. If that can be done by the end of the year then so be it, if I have to wait to next summer, that’s fine too, I got free time.
Anyways, you make awesome games this next one is a big undertaking so give it your all, I’ll be looking forward to it if it takes ten years.

I know I’m unusual, but I like the infrequent updates. Knowing that you’re not wasting time talking to us means you’re busy working! Yahtzee!
Also, you shouldn’t feel this need to perform for us all the time. Sure, it’s nice to see what you’ve been working on, but at the same time, we don’t want you to stop working to entertain us!
Or, um, whatever else it is programmers do. You don’t do anything but work, right?
Basically, it’s more important that you do stuff right than entertain us, or try to meet deadlines. If you really want to throw us something though, making a usable public alpha version could be interesting. That way, you can let us test out the gameplay mechanics and get a balanced view on that, while entertaining us! Everybody wins!
Obviously, that’s also a lot of unnecessary work, and I don’t wanna make life tough for you. Take it easy. If you work yourself to death before the game’s released, I’ll kill you. =P

I see a problem with infrequent updates and few news, because if people start thinking “oh it’s not gonna come out, look how few happens” and less people will think of the game, making it overall less known. And with that it could happen that garin cannot afford making another game after Godfall.
Think of it garin: there might be a few people who think less of the game with the unfinished screenshots, BUT.
It will get more known because people talk about.
It’s like the media says: Every publicity is good publicity

Time passes, time flies, but if there’s no patience, time shall be your ruin.
From the shadows I post again.
And so I return back.

Working on the game is definetly more important than giving us rabid fans updates
But just a suggestion: for me anyways I’d be cool to read just a line or two about what elements you are working on. Instead of say, a big huge post with new screenshots and stuff. Just a couple of lines saying what you are thinking about regarding the design would be cool enough.

does that ean the game is “nearly” done and that you think you might be able to publish it before 2011? If so, this is the best update since you said there would be a MD:GF

I don’t recall that 2010 date either, maybe Garin was simply hoping to release it then but never actually said it, and now thinks he did?
LETS HARASS HIM ABOUT IT!!! is it done yet? how about now? now? what about now?!
Nah seriously, I wasn’t expecting (one can hope though) the game to be out this year at all, and I don’t think anybody else was either. So I don’t think anybody would be upset if it wasn’t.

Hey, you do what you need to. This game will be worth the wait. So take your time and make it worth the wait, savvy?
We’re all behind you.
