Chronicles: Party Selection
I have mentioned before that I am experimenting with some new things in the structure of Chronicles. One of these is the persistent stable of characters.
Unlike previous games (and Godfall) you do not create characters. The first time you load the game you are presented with a group of pre-made default characters to build your party with. Although they are ready to go from the start, they can also be completely customized– name, appearance.. everything except their class. Yes, you’re limited to two of each class in this game.
Once you have assembled a party, you then select a mission. Any experience, skills and items you gain during the mission are saved. After the mission has ended, that character is again available for drafting into a new party.
Over time, the party select screen reflects your specific characters, built up over the course of your adventures.

How, exactly is this different? In both previous Monsters’ Dens, we chose our party from a group of pre-made classes. Are you meaning to say we can’t choose our skills, or…?

These aren’t just classes, they are complete characters. In previous MD games your characters lived and died with a specific campaign. That’s not the case any more.

Are there more classes than those five? Or are they simply more expanded?

Five classes. More / different skills than in earlier games, but just a subset of Godfall skills.

Just to clarify
the characters/heroes are of a preset class, just that we can modify their name and appearences?
The 10 ppl in the pictures, are those default appearences we can choose from? or are those pre made characters?

The whole character system isn’t too diffrent from before. You got those 10 guys up there. They’re pseudo-random for start I guess (fixed classes, 2 of each). And after each dungeon, you have to choose from those same 10 again, but the changes you made for them (level, skills) carry over. So you can scramble your party between each level, but are limited to 10 builds, amirite?

7th?! Damn you guys are on the ball today >=P.
Sounds like Etrian odyssey’s style to me. Only instead of registering a new adventurer from 0/50 or whatever the cap is, a fixed amount is already registerred, 2 of each class, and you customize them from then on. Then you’re free to change your party makeup and whatever every time you goto town if you wish.
Any plans on how unused characters will get exp? If any?

I think that a little specialization would really spice up the game. 2 of each class, but maybe with a slight difference between them?
Also, If the unused characters dont get exp, they’ll just become item mules. just sayin’.

Unused characters don’t gain experience. There’s no need for mules though, your inventory is huge, party-based and persistent too.
The two members of each class do have different skills.

Nice idea, ya know? Please tell me, that at least one mage still has Ensorcelled Blade! XD
Personally, i would also like a ratio system for Book of Dread. (Capcom vs SNK style) Instead of 4 characters, you would have 4 ratio points. Each character would use up 1 ratio point, so 4 characters would still be possible. But you could also spend 1 ratio point to give a character a secondary class or to give him free statpoints (15 stat points for every level up, but no fixed stat increase)
Imagine this: A Barbarian-Mage with free statpoints and a Warrior. Intimidate would send every nasty single target move to the warrior, which would be invincible due to constant Defiance. Even the nastiest frontrow combination (Two tank bosses and a Minotaur) couldn’t beat you. Labyrinth may still put the warrior and the barbarian into the same column, but if you spend all statpoints on endurance, the barbarian could easily eat the two following Void Canoons and Ensorcelled Blade would then fullcure the barbarian (if he has about 14% health draining) and kill one of the tank bosses. “In addition” Arcane Armor could raise the barbarians damage reduction to 99% for further invincibility.
I know that Garin would consider this not balanced enough, but it’s still fun to think about overpowered teams.

Is there any advantage in the use of more than 5 characters? Because, if I pick 5 dudes and use them, they will level up and grow stronger – the other 5 unused characters will just fall behind and become inferior options to your leveled up characters.
Or is there an option to replay low-level dungeons so they can catch up?

Hopefully there’s an instantly accessible (and option friendly) debug system for when a player loses his saved character or is on a different PC.
Mostly for the missions and the skills. The statistics can always be built up but the system kind of tones down the pick up and play factor of Monster’s Den and that was often Monster’s Den’s best quality. You could lose everything including a hardcore save and then you can just jump back in with a fresh new start since survivability is based on the random item generation rather than the buffness of the character once you narrowed down the builds. (Although I admit I never did figure out/read up on a build for Pandora’s box and for the early dungeons. Specifically ones with no Cleric or Warrior.)

I don’t see any female characters, or mention of that being an option on the first mission. Will it be an option?
You can freely name the characters as well as changing their appearance. So you should be able to make Female characters.

Wait, the top left one isn’t female?! My fantasies have just been shattered! *cries*
Seriously though, that’s… a good observation lol. I wonder if Garin is going to have to snag a second artist for that, cuz come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any female preview art at all this whole time.

Well spotted. I’ll do a blog post.

2nd row, 2nd character from the right. A leather armored, scimitar wielding rouge with a lamp?
