Chronicles: The Sprint to the Finish
It’s been a long time since I last posted, I’m sorry about that. I have been hard at work, when I haven’t been incapacitated by illness. The good news is that Chronicles is getting very close to being done.
To commemorate this historic event, please have a look at these new screenshots. I have shown the battle screen a couple of times, but I don’t think I’ve ever shown the new dungeon view or inventory screens before. Please let me know what you think.

There have to be way more classes. Please dont make the special classes a Kongregate feature! Kongregate is blocked by family safety, so it will ruin my game.
Here is a list of classes you could add: Mage, Wizard, illusionist, Warlock, Wrathmonk, Mallockee, Manafount, Thief, Assassin, Lurker, Barbarian, crossbowman ( Deals more damage, but is slower than archer ), Golem, Bard, Ninja, Samurai, Dragonlord, Knight.
Here is a list of races you could add: Troll, Golem, Human, Demon, Elf, Vampire, Zombie ( Can be killed ), Skeleton ( Can also be killed ), Orc, Dwarf, Minotaur, Centaur.

WOOT, i’m so excited, I come to the site all the time for news, my question is what does almost done mean? a week or two, or a month or two??
btw as he’s almost done i don’t think he’s going to be adding more classes… lol,

Is there any diffrence in the various bags in the inventory?
I’m hyped to see the quests =D

Allright.. Some progress. Woo… How long has it been now? Years? I’m starting to think just a base release with constant updates might be good too. Well, keep up the work.

Yay! Glad to hear back from you, sorry about the illness.

Wondering about new inventory system (what’s the difference between a backpack and a rucksack when they are just translations of each other?) but it looks good, keep up the nice work! By the way, I don’t want to wait any longer than the next guy, but take as long as you want to make this game as high-quality as you can.

@ChaosBladeDC – There’s no functional difference between the bags. You can rename them and set custom colors, as well as auto-looting preferences (item types and rarity thresholds)
@TheGreatKhan – The names in the screenshot are just the current defaults (used to be Party Inventory 1, Party Inventory 2 etc). They’re not indicative of anything, and I imagine most people will probably change them to something more descriptive of how they use them.

Garin,
I’ve followed this site daily since I began playing Monster’s Den: Book of Dread. Your games are everything I love about old-school RPG’s that I can’t devote the time to play anymore. I’ve been looking forward to Godfall, and now Chronicles since you shifted gears months ago since you first posted about them. While I hope to play Chronicles ASAP, I don’t believe anyone that follows this site wants you to put it out until you’re happy with the product. I love the customization aspects that you’ve added, as that is what gives me the connection to your games that other games lack currently. The simplicity of the battle system has also been a favorite of mine. I’m sure we’re as excited about the prospect of playing Chronicles as much as you are about finishing it. Thanks for keeping us in mind during your development of what I believe will be the Tecmo Super Bowl III of dungeon crawlers. (If you got that reference, then you know how epic I think this game will be!) Cheers Mate.

lol maybe you should make your own game. Keep up the good work, I think we are all excited to see how the game has progressed and how it looks. I really like the way you kept some of the aspects of the older den games that i really enjoyed.

If that’s the case, then it looks like we have tons of inventory space. I look forward to filling it up.

Are there going to be cheats?

Garin,
Love the new screen shots. I’m really looking forward to this being released.
The screen shots and the phrase “very close to being done”, raise lots of questions. Feel free to answer anywhere from none to all of them.
Very close) Do you have a projected/hoped for release date in mind? Do you plan to have a Beta?
I hope your “very soon” is nothing like Blizzard’s “Soon”.
Screen 1) Are those locked doors? Will we need to make use of character skills(pick lock, bash, knock) to pass them, or do things like clearing rooms or activating items like the giant lever unlock them? What’s the giant lever?
Screen 2) There seems to be a new item slot. Belt? Necklace? 5 bags of 100 slots is awesome. Do we start with all 5 or gain them along the way? Can there be more than 5? Does this mean shops are harder to get too?
Screen 3) Love the quest log/checklist. Can you tell us a little about the icons on the screen? Guessing the top part is up or down a level(if the stairs have been found), percent complete (enemies killed), and Percent explored. If that area shown is 14% of the level, the levels appear larger than in previous games. Nice! Curious about the scroll though. And the bottom looks like bag = inventory, gear = options (sound etc) but the others… Quest log? achievements?
Thanks for all your effort on what looks like a great game. I’m eager to spend many hours of many days exploring it.
Cheers,

@JadeHand: I’ll try to answer all your questions.
I do have a date I’m working towards but I’m not announcing it. A lot depends on negotiations with sponsors, and I don’t know if I’ll have time to do a proper beta with this one.
The lever unlocks the doors, yes.
The new equipment slot is “shoulders”.
In Chronicles you do start with all five bags, though that is the limit.
The Emporium is now accessible at all times (it’s the coin button in the menu at the bottom.) The first button is the character status screen, and the wreath is indeed for achievements.
The levels are larger than in previous games, and the view can now scroll. I had to make this change with the move to an isometric view. Otherwise, trying to fit everything on the screen at once would make the levels too small and cramped.

Garin,
Thank you for your responses. Sounds like the release is very close indeed. Hopefully before the end of the year. Very much looking forward to it. Will be checking Kongregate daily.
Best of luck with the sponsors, etc. Thanks again for the very enjoyable game series.
Cheers,

Do achievements have any purpose other than bragging rights and a pretty icon? I know most people like them just for vanity so it’s understandable that you’d add them even if that’s it. But I like it when games have USEFUL achievements so much (like in elona shooter). For example, if you haven’t played it. IF and when you buy 60 chickens (income source..no it’s not farmville, 60 is rather pricey btw), you get the achievement, which, increases chicken income by 20% or some such.

Quick question, any chance of seeing any those class ideas from the old biclops forums? Even if it’s just ninja, pirate, and martial artist?
And speaking of which, any chance to see the superlight aura armor idea?
garin when your saying very soon, is that 6 months, or 2 months?…
about 2 months ago
@Carin: I’ve never seen that garin managed to hit a release date he announced, not even closely. If he says to months for instance, you could assume 6 lol.
@James: Given the screenshot about the character selection, I’m 99% sure there won’t be more than the 5 standard classes. I wonder if he implements the beta item ideas from Book of Dread though. (I wanna see my mace again =D)
Yeah the base 5, Knight, priest, mage, rogue, ranger. In that order left to right for the pic.
Wonder if there’s gonna be more set styles for armor and weapons?
So much time. But that’s all I got now-a-days. Time.
